Maundy Thursday
During Holy Week, I attended the
Maundy Thursday service at our chapel. At this service, some churches choose to
do foot-washing as a way to continue the example shown to us by Jesus when he
washed the disciples’ feet. Back home, we would wash the feet of the person
behind us and since I sat with my family, I ended up washing my parents or
sisters’ feet. At the service on Thursday, President Jones and Chaplain Read
were welcoming people to get their feet washed. I got my feet washed by
President Jones. I am just a sophomore, someone without a position of power; I didn't deserve to have him washing my feet. Plus, foot-washing is awkward. It’s
so weird to have someone else touch your feet. These were some of the thoughts that ran through my mind. In the end, what foot-washing symbolizes is humility by serving others and doing as Jesus did.
