After having a conversation with
some people tonight who are into movies, I realized how few of the ones they
mentioned I had seen. They were talking about classic films that I had heard
about in passing but never had the time or took the time to watch for myself. Since
high school, I’ve always known that I missed out on the Disney movies because I
wasn’t around to see them. Maybe it’s never too late to recreate your
childhood. During the conversation, it was pointed out that all I do is go to
class, do homework, work and then leadership stuff. The person saying that was
telling the truth. Sometimes it seems like no matter how much work I get done
and such, I barely have enough time to sleep. I’ve become more conscious about
improving my schedule but sometimes, the fun stuff gets left out.
Even when busy, I’ve decided that
experiencing new things in college is more important than doing homework that I
won’t remember in forty years. Last week, the Hillel, Interfaith House and
House of Peace sponsored an off-campus to the University of Connecticut to see
the Idan Raichel Project. The way it was
described to me was that Idan Raichel was an Israeli music superstar, who collaborated
with other artists fusing elements of Hebrew, Middle Eastern and Ethiopian
music. I was very curious to see what it all sounded like. The concert ended up
being amazing! I couldn’t understand anything but I could feel the energy. The artists
were great and you could see the passion they had for music. When I got back
home, I found the group on Spotify and it turns out that they have a song in
Swahili that I can understand after all. The very next day, I was very tired
from four hours of sleep but my homework was done and I had a new appreciation
for music.
At the end of the day, we are all
busy people and it’s sad seeing that some of us lock ourselves away from
hanging out with friends or making new memories, especially when those are the
things we are going to remember later down the road and not the reading we did
for Wednesday night. I’ve realized how much my parents sacrificed to get me
where I am today, so I am not saying that I neglect my work or party too much
that I can’t finish what I’ve started at Trinity, but I do know that when
opportunities present themselves for me to learn something new, I’m just going
to have to sleep less that night.
Here's the video from Youtube of the Swahili song titled Maisha or Life:
