Not an Ordinary Day in Hartford

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch
It’s amazing to see how alike people are. They like to have a good time, spend time in the place they live in and win free things whenever possible.

I volunteered today at EnvisionFest Hartford, an event that brought people into downtown Hartford to enjoy music, food, activities and other festivities. One of the activities was getting a passport and collecting stamps and stickers of iconic buildings of the downtown area. For those who don’t know Hartford, these included the State Capitol Building, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, the Bushnell Theatre, the Phoenix Building and many more.

I was at the station with the Bushnell Theatre stamp and it was so nice to see people excited to collect all sixteen stamps and be entered into a drawing. We had kids who ran up to the booth to adults who did it just for the sake of doing it. There were all sorts of people walking downtown, from the Mayor of Hartford to one of my professor’s from last year. The Wadsworth Atheneum, a museum of the arts had an open house along with the Connecticut Science Center. In the morning, there was a discover Hartford bike tour for those who were interested.  It was great to see Hartford come alive!

My dad and I have been a fan of Hartford since day one. On campus though, I've had to listen to my fellow classmates complain about Hartford, its size, how dangerous it is and how it doesn't offer many options for college students. It seems that they only go off-campus for the bars or the restaurants. Last year, I was shy about exploring Hartford but I am making the effort to go off-campus more. While I do agree with the observations that Hartford may not have all the options that NYC or Boston has, I also know that I chose this place for what it has to offer and not how it compares up to the other big cities.
