College was the best time of my life; I’ve heard so many people say. In my head, I am thinking that if the college years were the best times of their lives, then I don’t want to know what sad lives they’ve lived. I guess that people do have a point. When else in time will I be on my own, with a support network, getting my degree while also having fun without too much responsibility? If I look at college this way, then, the college years will be some of the best years of my life.
The problem isn’t even necessarily that college is awful and I wish to skip these next few years, have a family and make history. The issue has been with the difference between what I thought college was and what it actually turned out to be. Of course, I knew that there was more to college than the social stuff and that academics would dominate my time. I believe that college was overhyped.
In high school, I saw college as this place where people were all friends, the professors were people you just clicked with and you could get involved with anything and it would somehow be meaningful. College was supposed to be this place where after taking classes you would know how to save the world by getting rid of world poverty, fixing the educational system and otherwise become the superman/woman that the world needs. It’s a place where after taking classes from many different departments, you would know what major you should be and what you were going to do for the rest of my life.
Maybe it’s just me who hasn’t accomplished all of this at college. If that’s the case, then someone please let me know what I am doing wrong.
I don’t mean to burst anyone’s bubble about their ideas of college but these are my observations.
College is like anything else. As a person, you may realize that you should have done a better job doing your research but like many things in life, you make it work!
It’s also a place where you discover that the world has so many issues that we have to work together to take care of.
College is full of drama if you aren’t careful to avoid it. There’s always going to be problems, drama and mean people, it’s up to you to not lose focus.
Even after declaring a major, you may not know what you’re going to do for the rest of your life. If people ask you what you want to do when you grow up, remind them that you just finish choosing your major and that was more than enough work for your poor body. After four years, I hope to have a better idea of what I like and where I may want to work, but I can’t make a final decision in what I’ll do until I retire. My poor brain can’t handle that!
Never mind all of this crazy talk, the college years are some great years! They have exposed me to many awesome people and allowed me to grow as a person. Very soon, they’ll allow me to see the rest of the world and for that; I am going to enjoy college. College is the reality that I must start enjoying before it’s gone and the best times of my lives pass me by.
