I’m
sitting here underneath a tree after a day’s worth of work. As some of you may know, I am back at Trinity
College working as a tour guide. I am the person who walks backwards showing
prospective students this beautiful campus. You might ask if this job is boring
and I would have to say no. The material that we say and the buildings that we
show are the same but we meet all sorts of people. For example, I did one tour
today that had an admitted student who is coming here this fall. We chatted
about the possibilities of getting her stuff across the country just like I had
to do. Another tour that I did, there was a group of eleven guys who were from
Florida and were visiting colleges across this region. While I told these
people the same things about Trinity, I also catered to their needs and
answered their questions as best as I could.
It’s
pretty fun being here but it’s different as this college experience has been. I
am used to summers where I wake up around noon, read all day, play with my
sisters and such. Basically, I lounge around the house and not get much
accomplished. This summer is different in that I am working, waking up early, cooking
my own meals and hopefully, seeing more of Hartford. I am able to Skype with my
sisters and I’ll be visiting a Lutheran church this Sunday but I definitely
feel somewhat grown up.
This
grown up concept can be somewhat upsetting. When I turned eighteen, it didn’t
matter for me. It just meant that I could sign my own papers. When I had to
cook for myself, I realized just how hard it is to make sure that I have a
balanced diet. Again, I am at college. I am not thrown into the real world
where I would have to manage every aspect of my life. Even being at this point
makes me question life, its meaning and so forth. If we were pessimistic, we
could say that we all lead the same lives. I went to two graduations this year
and the only differences were that different names were called. We go to
college and have the same experiences. We study abroad at mostly the same
places. We leave college, get a job, maybe get married, have kids, hopefully
not get divorced, we go back to reunions to brag about what we’ve accomplished
and if we fail, we realize that we have let our dreams down. Essentially, we
are born, live a human life and then we die.
As
I have said, my job is not boring because of the personalization that goes into
each tour. While we might have similar experiences, we don’t lead the same
lives since we’ve all been uniquely created in the eyes of God. I’m sure that
he would get bored if everyone lived the same lives. It would be like leading
the same tour for eternity.
That’s
all for now! I’m going back to chilling in the grass and watching the crazy
squirrels that love this campus.
